Chronology of Liuzhou

Liuzhou is the origin of primitive people “Liujiang” in south China. Bailian Cave is where they used to live in 30000 to 70000 years ago. Other heritages of ancient people also include Liyuzui at Longtan Park which was around 7000 years ago and Manwangcheng (about 4000 years ago), as well as some other smaller heritages along the Liujiang river.

111 BC (West Han Dynasty): beginning of Liuzhou: Tanzhong prefecture established which was belonged to Yuling prefecture 

274AD (Three Kingdoms era): Guiling prefecture was separated from Yuling and Tanzhong prefecture was belonged to Guiling then

282AD (Jin Dynasty): became capital of the prefecture

540AD (Liang Dynasty): became capital of Maping prefecture

591AD (Sui Dynasty): Tanzhong was renamed to Guiling before changing to Maping.

605AD (Tang Dynasty) Maping belonged to part of Guiling.

607AD (Tang Dynasty): belonged to Shian prefecture

621AD (Tang Dynasty) Maping belonged to Kunzhou which was renamed to South Kunzhou

742AD (Tang Dynasty) Renamed to Longcheng prefecture;

758AD (Tang Dynasty): Longcheng prefecture was renamed to Liuzhou.

Liuzhou has been the home to many ethnic minorities including Zhuang, Yao and the majority Han Chinese. It has been a city where different cultures integrate.

In January 1994, Liuzhou was officially listed as one of the Historical Cities in China by the state council.
